Activités


The island can be visited on foot, by mountain bike, by motorcycle or by quad, from one village to the other, on sandy roads, tracks or paths along the coast, across superb vegetation.
The island has many treasures to discover: walking, swimming, diving, pirates’ history, meeting with the humpback whales and tasting coco punch while watching the sunset.



Plongée

       

Considered as one of the finest sites in the Indian Ocean, Sainte-Marie Island offers an unspoilt area for keen divers. You will have the chance to discover a very rich sea fauna consisting of a great variety of tropical fish which live in the ship wrecks.

In order to bring you the best possible service, you will be able to book diving lessons and prepare various diving certificates such as SSI, PADI and NASE at the diving centre
IL BALENOTTERO run by Massimo Felici, Snorkelling is also available in the beautiful wild lagoon that surrounds Boraha Village. You will also have the possibility to go to the “Ilots aux Sables” to discover many colourful fish in the coral reef.

Pêche

Every year, from June to September, thousands of humpback whales coming from Antartica, travel all the way to Sainte-Marie Island to reproduce and give birth to their babies.You can only see this impressive show in very few places in the world.
These enormous cetaceans weighing over 30 to 40 tons, about 17 meters long, live in Antartica where they strive on krill. From April onwards, they start a 6.000 km long journey which will take them to their favourite spots: Madagascar and Sainte-Marie Island.Come and discover this incredible show in all safety on board our traditional 17 meter boat!

Pêche

At Boraha-Village, fishermen can practice their favourite sport. Both amateurs and keen fishermen will be fulfilled by the diversity of fish they will find in our waters.

Madagascar is an envied place amongst fishing destinations
Blue carangua, giant trevallies, barracudas, Chinese curs, yellow fine tuna, false albacore, coryphen gilt heads, groupers, skates, snappers, without forgetting hammer sharks, or white tip sharks...

You can practice different fishing techniques according to your tastes: trolling, surfcasting, bait fishing. You can also try casting with poppers from the boat or along the coral reef...

Excursions

       

These are just a few examples of the various excursions you can take from Boraha Village:

Swimming and Snorkelling at Ilot aux Sables
Boarding from the pontoon at Bohara Village, across the great lagoon and along the coral reef. L’Ilot aux Sables is an inlet situated on clear waters off the east coast.You can either swim in shallow clear waters or go snorkelling amongst the exotic fish.

Pirates’ cemetery
It is on board a traditional canoe that you will discover the pirates’ cemetery located on Forbans Bay. To reach this site, you will use the canals across the island, surrounded by luxurious vegetation.

Ampanihy Bay
You will sail along the east coast towards the north, for over 10 km, along the coral reef to Ampanihy Bay. On the left hand side, behind the sandy bay, you will find a lovely beach, ideal for swimming. On the right hand side, a narrow lane will take you across vanilla and clove fields to the picturesque village of Anafiafy.

Visit of the capital city Ambodifototra
Stroll in the animated capital city, visit the harbour and the market, discover l’Ilot Madame and the various souvenir shops.

Visit to Nosy Nanto
Embark at the pontoon and sail across the lagoon towards the south. After crossing the canal, you will disembark to visit the Blevec lighthouse, walking through small lanes along the coast where you can stop for a swim or a snack.

The East loop
From the capital city, drive eastwards along the coast to Anafiafy in Ampanihy.Bay. You will stop there for your lunch break. The track then turns to reach the West coast, offering a large variety of landscapes. The return trip follows the West coast.

Day trip to the Cocoteraie Beach
This boat excursion departs from the Barachois. It will enable you to discover the West coast of Sainte Marie, from Ambodifotrata to the North head. We draw alongside the magnificent beach of La Cocoteraie from a swim and a rest after lunch.

Trekking inside the island
Enjoy the quiet local way of life: visit small farming villages nested in the valleys, walk along the rice fields and across the streams and finally rest under a coconut tree.

Picnic at the pointe à Larrée
Embark at the small harbour of Ambodifototra and sail across the West coast to cross the lagoon towards la pointe à Larrée. This long beach forms an ideal spot for swimming and to discover the island.
